are always delighted to help support the excellent
work of UK and overseas charities working to improve world health.
We are delighted to do whatever we can to help people fighting
poverty
and diseases.
The ELF ( www.european-lung-foundation.org
) is one such charity
working in the very important field of scientific research and
the
disssemination of information. Oddly enough, although lung diseases
are a common cause of illness and death, the ELF is not so well-known
as some other charities dealing with, say, cardio-vascular diseases
such
as the British Heart Foundation.

The European Lung Foundation and European Respiratory Society
are charities based in Sheffield in S. Yorkshire and Lausanne
on the
shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland. Their staff work hard to
help
increase the medical professionals' and the public's knowledge
and
understanding of lung diseases and treatments. Lung diseases
include
SARS, bird flu, bronchitis, COBD, asthma and lung cancer.
The European Lung Foundation
is effectively the public voice of the
ERS. When the ELF wanted a low cost team building programme in
Derbyshire to help staff from different departments and sites
to
get to know each other better during their Jan 2009 annual
conference Peak Activities Ltd's Iain Jennings was asked to put
together a fun filled programme. Iain was only too happy to oblige.
What better than to fill up everyone's lungs with a healthy dose
of
great Derbyshire fresh air as the delegates got to know each
other
better as they attacked our newest orienteering site ?

: lung diseases are major killers !
LUNG DISEASES ARE A
MAJOR CAUSE OF DEATHS...
Jean-Luc has
informed us that in 2020 it is expected there will
be approx. 68 million deaths, of which some 11.9 million are
expected to be caused by lung diseases... 4.7 million caused\by
Chronic Obstructive Bronchial Disorder and 2.5 million by
pneumonia and some 2.3 million caused by lung cancer. Here in
the UK lung diseases are already the leading cause of deaths
- far
outnumbering deaths from cardiovascular diseases. In many other
parts of the world lung diseases are the second or third major
cause
of deaths. Lung cancer is generally but not exclusively caused
by
smoking... but smoking is a major cause of avoidable lung related
deaths.
